Let’s talk about sex, baby. Let’s talk about
you and me why that couple over there might be getting down and dirty more often than you and your boo.
We’ve all got that one friend who’s always bragging about their sex life. Where they did it, how often they do it, and how good it is. But just because they’re doing it that often doesn’t mean everyone is.
No two sex lives are alike – they differ from relationship to relationship. In fact, if you want to know how often a heterosexual couple is having sex, observe the female counterpart’s personality.
In a study conducted at Flordia State University, two psychologists studied 278 heterosexual newlywed couples. Each couple was asked to keep a daily diary of their sexual frequency and take a personality test testing the Big Five personality traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.
The study found that men initiated sex more than women (surprise, surprise). However, how often the couple actually had sex was highly dependable on two specific personality traits in the women: openness to experience and agreeableness. The higher the wife rated on those two traits, the higher the frequency of getting down and dirty. On the flip side, the husband’s personality was not a predictor of how often the couple had sex.
Sexual satisfaction, however, was a totally different story. The study showed that both partners’ personalities mattered. Higher levels of neuroticism in both the husband and wife were linked with lower levels of satisfaction. Surprisingly, if a husband rated high on openness, it negatively affected his satisfaction, while for wives, it was the opposite.
While there’s no magic sex number that can predict how happy you’ll be in your relationship, just remember, relationship satisfaction plays a big role in sexual satisfaction and vice versa. So no matter often you roll around in the sheets, just make sure every romp is one for the books!
