For some people juggling the demands of a personal life and career is a continuous battle. Vv Magazine’s Cristina Avila gives us tips on how to balance work, life, and a side hustle.
Let’s face it… sometimes a full-time job just can’t pay all of your bills! Alternatively, you may have fallen into a career path that isn’t as creatively, intellectually or physically fulfilling as you had envisioned for yourself. Taking on a “side hustle” outside of a traditional 9-to-5 job can solve both of these problems by helping you to pay the bills and add the substance needed to live a more well-rounded and satisfying life.
A side hustle is a flexible second job that allows you to earn some extra cash by doing something that you are truly passionate about and gives you the opportunity to embrace your entrepreneurial side! Side hustles can range from freelance writing to selling baked goods to detailing cars from your home garage – the possibilities are endless and reflect your natural abilities and skills.
While introducing a side hustle into your life can significantly increase your mood, wallet, and professional network, there is a downfall to juggling the demands of two jobs and no longer just one. The art of maintaining a successful side hustle is rooted in the ability to achieve work-life balance. Only by doing so, can you continue to pursue two gigs and reap the full benefits of having both.
Striving for the ideal work-life balance can seem like a stretch, but with the right mindset, it’s completely achievable. In an effort to master the art of the side hustle, here are our top tips for achieving work-life balance.
Do What You Love And Love What You Do
It sounds cheesy, but it’s true. Your side hustle gives you an opportunity to get paid for doing something that you’d likely do anyway for free (note – that’s how I started writing). If you have a passion for what you do, you’ll likely spend time learning how to improve your craft, developing efficiencies and finding ways to increase your enjoyment. Whether it’s instructing yoga or doing household repairs, paying clients will acknowledge and show appreciation for the good work that you’re doing. This, in turn, will make you want to do it more! It’s a no-brainer – when you’re doing something you love, it doesn’t feel like work and aids in achieving that sought-after work-life balance.
Support Your Side Hustle with Your Career
As you know by now, the best side hustles do not feel like work. Even better side hustles actually increase the fulfillment you receive from your day job and make it feel less like a chore. My side hustle derived from my day job as a marketing professional – typically a highly creative role, I found myself hitting corporate roadblocks and spent days creatively unsatisfied. Possessing a ton of experience within the retail industry, I chose to channel my knowledge into a side hustle where I could write about shopping (sticking to what I know best). In turn, having a creative outlet as a side hustle has really allowed me to appreciate my career and the learning opportunities I’ve received from it that I’m able to share with others. When your side hustle and career can fit collaboratively into your life and not competitively, you are well on your way to achieving work-life balance.
Surround Yourself With Like-Minded People
When you’re constantly surrounded by “goal digger” mentality, it’s hard to be satisfied with the status quo. Increasingly, millennials (those most likely to take on side hustles,) are obsessed with doing more and achieving more. This ambitious spirit can be contagious amongst groups of friends who possess the same entrepreneurial mindset. The great thing about surrounding yourself with like-minded side hustlers is that you will motivate each other to keep on killing it in your field(s) of choice. In pursuing your side hustle, be sure to share your experiences with others who are striving for that same work-life balance alongside you. There is power in numbers and together you can gain network connections, share resources and increase your overall job satisfaction.
